When the tool-only backpack makes financial sense
The first check is simple: do you already have two compatible 24V batteries available for this blower? Because the BL48020 needs two 24V packs at the same time to produce its 48V supply, owning only one compatible battery does not create a ready-to-run setup.
If the answer is yes, the tool-only model lets you add the backpack blower without duplicating batteries you already use elsewhere in the Greenworks 24V system. If the answer is no, compare the complete cost of adding the required batteries and charging equipment with the same 297 km/h backpack blower supplied with two 8Ah batteries. That kit includes the blower, two 8Ah USB-C batteries, a 140W USB-C charger and two cables.
There are also smaller 48V entry points if a backpack is more machine than the job requires. The 217 km/h blower kit with two 2Ah batteries is a handheld option with its required battery pair already included. The useful question is not whether the backpack is more powerful on paper, but whether your normal clearing route is large enough to benefit from its airflow and carrying format.
Plan storage and transport around the backpack format
A backpack blower should not be treated like a handheld blower that can simply be dropped onto a narrow shelf after use. The BL48020 has a backpack harness and a long blower outlet, so it deserves a storage position where the harness is not crushed and the tube is not repeatedly knocked or bent.
Before buying, look at the space where the machine will actually live. A garage wall, wider shelf or dedicated floor area may be more practical than the small-tool storage used for handheld garden equipment. The same applies when transporting it in a car or van: allow room for the backpack body and tube instead of assuming it will fit into the same gap as a compact blower.
If storage space is tight and you also want leaf collection, the 48V blower/vacuum tool-only model takes a different approach, combining blowing and vacuuming in a handheld format. Buyers who need that function with batteries included can instead look at the 2×4Ah blower/vacuum kit.
Adjust the harness before starting a long route
The backpack format earns its place when the job lasts long enough for weight distribution and steady control to matter. Greenworks lists the BL48020 at 4.98 kg and describes the harness as distributing weight across the shoulders and back. Set the harness before starting rather than trying to correct the fit halfway through the route.
The blower also has variable speed, cruise control and Turbo. On a long driveway or garden perimeter, use variable speed where precise airflow matters, then engage cruise control when a steady output is useful over a longer open stretch. Turbo is better saved for stubborn patches that need maximum blowing performance rather than held continuously across the whole route.
For large-area work, a simple route helps: clear one edge or section at a time and keep pushing debris toward planned collection points. That reduces repeated walking and makes the backpack format work as intended.
The tool-only BL48020 is therefore most convincing when three conditions are already true: you have the required compatible 24V batteries, you have enough storage space for the backpack format, and your regular clearing jobs are long enough to benefit from the harness and cruise control. If those conditions do not apply, a smaller handheld kit or the complete 2×8Ah backpack package may be the cleaner purchase.
