The 10:1 mulching figure is more useful as a guide to what happens after collection: the leaves are broken down into smaller material, making the load easier to handle.

Collected leaves can also be useful afterwards. RHS advice on leafmould notes that some thick leaves, including sycamore, walnut, horse chestnut and sweet chestnut, should be shredded because they break down more slowly. That gives the mulching function a practical second role when suitable leaves are being kept for leafmould.
