Cordless Chainsaw Cutting When Bar Length and Output Both Matter

Cutting thicker branches, larger logs and timber at ground level puts more emphasis on bar length than routine pruning does. A compact saw can still make the cut, but wider material may require more repositioning around the timber. A 40cm bar gives the bar and chain more reach across the cut, making a saw of this size better suited to garden work where larger material appears regularly rather than occasionally.

The Greenworks GD40CS18 combines a 40cm bar with 1.8 kW output and a 20 m/s chain speed. It uses the Greenworks 40V battery system and is a Gen II tool-only model, so it fits most naturally where compatible 40V batteries are already available. The saw weighs 3.81 kg and has a 180 ml oil reservoir with automatic chain oiling.

For ground-level work on larger branches, logs and prepared timber, that combination gives more cutting reach without changing to a different tool format. A conventional battery chainsaw keeps the cutting head directly in front of the operator and suits material that can be positioned safely within normal reach. The 40cm guide bar becomes useful when a shorter bar would otherwise mean more repositioning around the same piece.

Battery ownership also affects the fit. This model uses any Greenworks 40V battery, so an existing 40V garden setup avoids adding another battery platform. If your existing equipment instead runs on Greenworks 24V batteries, the 36cm cordless electric chainsaw uses two 24V batteries together to provide a 48V system. That platform difference may matter more than a few centimetres of bar length when batteries and chargers are already part of the equipment you use.

Electric Battery Chainsaws for Stop-Start Cutting Without Fuel Preparation

Electric battery chainsaws suit stop-start work: cutting a fallen branch, reducing a stack of timber, clearing material after garden maintenance and then putting the saw away until the next job. There is no fuel mixture to prepare or combustion engine to start before each session. With a charged battery fitted, preparation centres on the cutting equipment and lubrication rather than fuel.

For intermittent garden work, that can reduce the setup between cutting sessions. The GD40CS18's automatic oiling system supplies the chain during use, and the battery can be removed for storage or before work around the bar and chain.

A 40cm saw is not automatically the better match for every battery-powered job. If most cutting involves smaller branches and lighter timber, a shorter bar reduces the amount of saw extending beyond the material. For an existing Greenworks 40V setup, the 30cm greenworks chainsaw uses the same battery family in a more compact cutting format.

At 35cm, cordless chainsaws can sit between compact cutting and a 40cm bar for medium timber. Greenworks' 40V 35cm model keeps the same battery platform while reducing both bar length and listed tool weight compared with the GD40CS18. Where wider logs are only occasional, that can make the saw easier to position without changing batteries and chargers.

The GD40CS18 earns its extra length when wider cuts appear often enough to use it. If they do not, the added bar length can simply make a smaller job less convenient to position.

Electric Chainsaws and the Jobs a 40cm Bar Is Better Suited to Handle

A 40cm guide bar is most useful on larger garden timber, substantial fallen branches and logs being reduced for handling or storage. On these jobs, the extra reach across the cut can reduce the need to work around the same piece simply because the cutting attachment is short.

The extra length matters less when the work is dominated by narrow branches. In tighter spaces around shrubs, fencing or dense planting, a shorter cutting setup can be easier to place. The GD40CS18 therefore makes more sense where there is enough working room for a conventional 40cm powered chainsaw and the material is wide enough to use the extra bar length.

If you are starting without batteries, the package matters as much as the bar length. The 36cm battery electric chainsaw is supplied with two 4Ah 24V batteries and a charger, using the two batteries together as a 48V system. That is a different ownership starting point from adding the tool-only GD40CS18 to batteries already in the shed.

Bar length cannot solve a reach problem. A standard chainsaw is suited to material that can be approached from a stable working position; extending a conventional saw towards high branches does not turn it into a pruning tool. Where the cutting point is overhead and access is the limiting factor, a saw on pole puts the cutting head on an extended shaft for higher branches. Greenworks' 40V pole-saw model uses a 20cm cutting attachment for that type of work.

The GD40CS18 fits most naturally where larger ground-level timber is a recurring part of the work and compatible Greenworks 40V batteries are already owned. Smaller timber, a different battery platform, a need for batteries in the package or high-branch pruning can all point to a different physical setup. More bar length is useful only when the job can make use of it.
